CLCD: Randolph Caldecott winner, 2012.
Horn Book Guide: Daisy and her little girl owner play catch. All goes well until another dog, pops Daisy's big red ball. Raschka communicates so much through Daisy's posture, varying the line to echo her emotions. Background washes also reflect Daisy's mood, from bright yellows to somber browns. A satisfying story noteworthy both for its artistry and child appeal.

Even though this is a wordless story the author was effective at conveying meaning to each page. I was able to feel sad for Daisy because she was so heartbroken. This was accomplished through the illustrations and by changing the bright colors to shades of brown. He also had images of Daisy laying on the couch looking really sad and sleeping all day. Thankfully, Daisy gets another ball from the owner of the dog that destroyed her ball. At the end, Daisy received another ball and at the same time, she gained a new dog friend.
This book would be useful when teaching…
A Ball for Daisy can be useful when teaching about feelings. Sad, happy, angry, worry etc....I would perform dialogic reading and engage the children in expressing the different types of emotions the dog is experiencing.
