Summary: A Picture Book of Rosa Parks is the story of the life of Rosa Parks. It is the story of her fight and figure in the civil rights movement.
Summary of Professional Reviews: This story was more than just a brief biography, it gave the whole insight into Rosa Parks life. From when she was little and her own family. To when she made a stand, not moving from her seat on the bus. This story does not only point out the unfair things of segregation, such as the separation between public buses and water fountains. But also the cruless, such as the ku klux klan.
Review by Jane: I thought this story took all the complicated aspects of segregation and made it into an easy to understand, enjoyable picture book. The story made sure to mention happy moments but also the hard and terrifying moments of Rosa life. It also commemorated her memory referring to her as the 'mother' of the civil rights movement. The pictures in this story are breath-taking. They are beautiful and accurate to the time period.
This book would be useful when teaching…
I believe Rosa Parks story is about Courage and having a voice. I believe also that students should stand up for what they believe in. Therefore i would base a lesson off this. I would ask students if there is anything in their life that is unfair? What do you believe in? If you could change something what would it be? Then i would have student further explore topics they are interested in, creating a project out of it.
Another time to use this book is on Martin Luther King Day. The bus strike was lead by Dr. Martin Luther King and this book also commemorates his memory as well.
