Summary:
The bear in the story finds a piece of paper one day in his cave and he becomes curious until he one day stumbles upon a cabin with a girl siting in a chair reading books. Day after day the bear would return to the girl and eventually sit right in front of her and when winter comes she lets all of her books outside for him and he takes them to his cave so when he dreams he thinks of her reading them to him.
Summary of Professional Reviews:
When reviewed by Julie Cummins, this book is said to have a gentle, yet powerful message about the importance and pleasure of reading. The pencil illustrations give a good reflection of the bear's viewpoint and the colored fur of the bear makes a good balance with the skin of the girl. As stated by Kirkus Reviews, there is never a sense of tension with the bear. It was also said that if adults look beneath the surface they will realize the message about the value of reading to children.
Review by Ashley:
I feel that this book expressed true calmness between the bear and the girl. I felt that the bear enjoyed the girl's company, as much as she enjoyed his. The plot is suspenseful because you do not if the bear is going to be calm throughout the book or what is going to happen between the girl and the bear. The warm artwork enhances the pages and gives such a welcoming feeling to the book with the rustic red and orange blended together. The design and format of the book are cleverly done because you do not expect the bear to take all of the girl's books at the end and save them in his cave, but he felt close to her so he wanted to have them with him.
This book would be useful when teaching...
A Story For Bear is an excellent book to teach children about reading for pleasure and how important reading can be. Reading can have a lot of meaning behind it, but when children simply read because they want to they gain a great experience.
