Summary: Aggie the Brave reinforces the special bond that exists between human beings and animals. Ben discovers that he will have to part with his dog for a day when he takes Aggie to the vet. All the courage and strength Ben was showing to Aggie vanishes and he returns home sad. Even after Aggie is back from the vet, she is not her usual self because of the pain. Review by Shadab Ashraf: It is a heart warming story about the special bond shared between a boy and his faithful pet. The text successfully depicts the character of Ben as a caregiver through the effective use of dialogues. Ben's comforting words, encouragement, and advises to Aggie, his pet, create an image of a responsible and concerned owner. The illustrations are an extension of the text and convey the unsaid. The picture showing Ben bursting into tears expresses his extreme sadness. His expressions show that he is hiding his emotions behind a brave front. Multiple pages without text and illustrations depict the emptiness caused in Ben's life without Aggie. Ben dressed in formal to receive Aggie shows his excitement. Young readers are sure to enjoy this reading and it will definitely connect chords with young animal lovers.
