Summary:
Three frogs found an egg (pebble) and it hatched. The egg then became friends with the one frog. They called it a chicken but it ended up being an alligator.
Summary of Professional Reviews:
Jessica collects stones and pebbles, but her friends Marilyn and August, also frogs, do not have interest. Marilyn identifies it as a chicken egg. A baby alligator hatches out, but the frogs continue to call it a chicken. When Jessica helps the "little chicken" find his mother, she's amused when the mother calls him "my sweet little alligator." Kids will love identifying the little alligator and laughing at the frogs' mistake.
Review by Kim Beers...
There were three frogs that found a pebble, but the pebble turned out to be an egg. When it hatched they thought it was a chicken. It became very good friends with one of the frogs. One day they saw a bird and the bird told them that the mother was looking for the 'chicken.' It turned out to be an alligator. The purpose of the book is to be funny. It also shows how different animals can become friends. The affiliation in the beginning of the story of how the egg looks like a pebble allows students to see differences between the two.
This book would be useful when teaching...
An Extraordinary Egg can be used with distinguishing newly born animals. The teacher can have pictures of baby animals and then older animals and students have to match the pictures to demonstrate that they understand.
