Summary: This is a true story of two male penguins who fall in love. They notice they are not like all the other penguin couples but that does not stop them from raising and caring for a chick.
Summary of Professional Reviews: This is a Kirkus starred review book. The reviewers believed that the illustrations were timely, and accurate and enjoyed the smiles that the illustrator gave to both the fathers and the baby chick. They also thought that readers would be more accepting to this un ordinary and controversial theme because it was, "delivered in such a matter of fact, non-preachy way."
Review by Kitty Anthony: I thought this was an excellent way to present and discuss such a controversial topic. I believe that because this story is in fact based on true events it will help the children and families who read this be more accepting of these situations. I also enjoyed the illustrations and colors the illustrator uses to create and portray the story.
This book would be useful when teaching…
This can be a very difficult topic to teach young children so teachers should be careful when thinking about how to approach this topic. However, I believe that teachers do need to address this topic in their classrooms because the children will benefit if they learn about it at an early age. I believe that after the teacher reads the book to the class the teacher can lead a discussion about the different types of families that children have and the different people that take care of them. They can also talk about how people should never judge anyone and we should all be accepting of one another. This topic can also lead into discussions about bullying and other topics.
