Summary: A great book about a girl who finds a dog who literally changes her life. The main character, India Opal, finds new friends, along with a new pup in this magical adventure tale. The witty, yet serious storyline will have all readers in love with India Opal and her dog, Winn Dixie. Throughout the book, India Opal meets many interesting people who shape her character and give her a positive outlook on life.
Professional review: This Kirkus Starred Review rated book is a favorite of all. Reviewers have said this book is "wonderful," "fascinating," and a great tale about about companionship. One reviewer even said, "Every reader will learn to appreciate what they have and will feel a sense of happiness just by reading this simple book."
My Review: This is a feel-good story about acceptance and friendship. The book has a simple plot and is very well written. Although the book lacks illustrations, DeCamillo uses such detail with describing many aspects of the book, allowing you to create the characters and scenarios with your imagination. I remember this was the first book I ever read from start to finish that I enjoyed every minute of. I've had this book since 5th grade, when it was introduced to me, and I read it from time to time for a pleasurable easy read.
This would be a great book to read in the beginning of school since it is about making new friends. Also, A great book for a read-a-loud since it might be above the ZPD of most children in early childhood education.
