Summary: After being invited to a classmate's birthday party, Rubina's younger sister Sana demand she goes too. As the book progresses not only does a sibling rivalry unveil itself but also a story of immigrants adjusting to unfamiliar customs.
Summary of Professional Reviews: With their Pakistani background, Rubina's family does not always understand some American customs. When Rubina is given an invitation for a classmate's birthday party, her younger sister Sana insists on going with her. Eventually Sana receives her own invite to a party and their youngest sister does the same thing to her that Sana did to Rubina. With Blackall's impressive illustrations we find a book that brings to front not only sibling rivalries, but also the life of an immigrant family adjusting to American customs.
Review by Terese Wylie: In Kahn's book Big Red Lollipop we follow Rubina as she tries to fit in with the new customs she is learning in America compared to the ones her mother implies from their Pakistani background. Every child can relate to the excitement that Rubina has when she receives her first invite to a birthday party. Many can also relate to the feeling she experiences when she her younger sister intrudes on her plans and then takes her lollipop. Blackall's illustrations also bring the book to life and not only create a perfect compliment to the story but also allows the readers to follow along with all of the events in the book.
