Blue Chicken
Review by: Samantha Formato
Author: Deborah Freedman
Publisher: Viking
Year of Publication: 2011
Genre: Fiction
Summary: In this simple picture book, Deborah Freedman has created a loving character that in the hopes of helping, instead wreaks havoc on a farm with a bucket of blue paint. The chicken, who is the main character tries to help, but only makes things worse as she accidentally paints things bluer and bluer.
Professional Review: Horn book gives this book a 2. Horn book says, "Metafiction fans will appreciate the sheer joy of this book that celebrates color and innocent mischief." They really liked the character of the apologetic chicken who tries to set everything right.
My Review: The illustrations in this book are adorable and humorous. It is a creative story and I love how the author brings the painting to life within the book. The author did a good job at making the book comical and engaging by having the chicken be an irresistible character. This book would be great to use at story time with children.
How to use in the classroom: I could use this in my classroom by teaching the children about colors and perspective. The author of this book plays a lot with colors and perspective and it would be easy to teach those things by reading this book and enforcing the ideas.
