Blue Chicken
Review by: Brian Beck
Author: Deborah Freedman
Publisher: Viking
Year of Publication: 2011
Genre: Fiction, Humor
Summary: When an animal gets into the blue pain meant to paint the barn, the drawer isn't sure what to do. Eventually the they paint the sky blue and the problem is solved, until the animals get into the red paint!
Professional Review: This Kirkus Starred Reviewed book is applauded for it's "breathtakingly beautiful meta-illustrations will draw many eyes to this tale of a curious chicken who spills some paint." The colors, patterns and shadings are done well and the book will be loved by children.
My Review: I really enjoyed the pictures in this book. I wasn't thrilled with the story line because it didn't really seem purposeful. Other than introducing colors, I don't think this book deserves the praise it has gotten. I think the author was trying to be funny and discuss the chicken getting into mischief, but it was just a little too silly for me.
How to Use in the classroom: This book could be used for introducing colors to very young children. It would be great to use for a read aloud and incorporate an art lesson, introducing the color blue. Children could paint only using blue and discuss the characteristics of the color.
