Summary: Jim and Charlie hear their teachers speaking in a language code and they know that something is up. They try to figure out what the language is and how they can understand the language being spoken. Once they figure out the language, they realize that they are formulating a plan to make the world go BOOM.
Summary of Professional Reviews: Boom encompasses a time when two children find out that their teachers are actually aliens. They find this out by listening to their secret language that they speak together. According to the Horn Book, this story has plenty of "cliff hanging" endings of chapters, along with plenty of "wise-cracking jokes" to keep the reader going.
Review by Katie Henderson: This is a story that I feel only a few students would like to read. The concept of two young students believing that their teachers are aliens is a great plot; however, some of the parts of the story seem hard to follow. The endings of each chapter leave the reader guessing every time, and the way Haddon sets up each episode in the story is done well; however, the episodes seem rushed and unfinished at times.
This book would be useful when teaching...children about how one person can save the whole team. In this story, if Charlie hadn't discovered that his teachers were aliens formulating a plot to make the world go BOOM, then the world would have been broken into pieces. It would be a great teaching opportunity to show children that it only takes one person to save a lot of people.
