Summary: Brothers In Hope is a moving story about eight-year-old Garange who was part of a group of boys who escaped war. This story is about the Lost Boys and their struggles in Africa.
Summary of Professional Reviews: The word inspiring is the most used word when describing this book. These boys faith and heart is shown through the long text and pictures. The boy focuses on the live of the lost boys, but not so much on the actual war that occurred.
Review by Janelouise Fuscellaro: The Story of Garange is an inspirational tale that makes me, born and raised in the United States, feel lucky for the life I live. Garange is a young boy who has been through struggles and the text portrays such struggles. During the story you experience Garange's emotions and emphasize. The pictures brought out the African culture of the book. The pictures to me looked as it a young child painted and drew it himself, making me think back to how young the lost boys themselves were.
This book would be useful when teaching…
Brothers In Hope would be useful when talking to children about world hunger. I am not sure little children would understand the whole aspect of the war and the loss. But, children will understand or emphasize the emotions of being alone and hungry. Maybe at the begging of the year a teacher could read this story and the students can come up with ways to help, like food donations. It could be a year long service project the class works towards.
