Summary: After a "cold snap" hits the town of Toby Mills, the towns people have to learn how to adapt for a week to the harsh cold temperatures. Just before the townspeople say enough is enough the Mayor's wife comes up with a way to maintain the hopeful spirit of the people in hope that warmer weather will soon return to them.
Summary of Professional Reviews: As a cold snap innocently begins on Friday, with children enjoying sledding, snowball fights, and other winter weather fun, we are shown by the icicle on the town founder's nose how long and cold this cold snap will be. As the week progresses and the icicle grows while the patience of the townspeople wears thin. The details that Spinelli puts into her writing is actually brought to life in Priceman's illustrations which brings a hide-and-seek aspect along with the book.
Review by Terese Wylie: When a snow storm hits the town of Toby Mills on a Friday, the children are elated as they partake in winter based activities and an icicle appears on the statue of the town's founder. As the week progresses, the cold snap begins and as the temperature continues to drop the icicle on the statue gets longer and longer. Finally to restore morale in the town, the mayor's wife decides to have a bonfire at the top of the hill to bring back something that the town seemed to have lost: heat. Spinelli's writing might not be the best in term of story line, but it is one that every child and adult can relate to at some time of their life. The story could become an instant classic with the added works of Priceman. Her creative illustrations create a hide-and-seek game that goes along with the writings of Spinelli. Every small aspect that Spinelli describes, Priceman made sure to include into the story.
