Summary of Professional Reviews: The Horn Book Guide gives this story a rating of 3. According to the Horn Book Guide the illustrations in this story really help the readers get the horror feeling that the Jasper is feeling. They said that the illustrations "all in gray-scale except for the orange sentient carrots, take full advantage of the goofy story's mock horror". According to Kirkus the book is written using " succinct language" and it "allows understatements to be fully exploited in Brown's hilarious illustrations."
Review by Ivette Thompson: I really enjoyed reading this story. There was some repetition throughput the story and it has an unpredictable ending. In the story Jasper keeps feeling like he sees and or hears the creepy carrots coming for him but then they seem to be only his imagination. I feel that the author and the illustrator do a great job at keeping the reader guessing and trying to figure out if what Jasper thinks is happening is really happening or not. I also enjoyed the illustrations. The pictures are in different shades of grey except for the carrots and other orange items are in color. The grey shades help the reader see how confused and scared Jasper is. This book teaches children about problem solving.
