In this book a boy named Daniel gets a baby chick, he names Jen, as a pet and he feds her every day until she becomes a hen. One day Daniel does not see Jen, but is told by his mother that she is inside laying eggs and Daniel realizes that he will have lots of pets now.
Summary of Professional Reviews:
According to Mary Quattlebaum, this book is a good choice for children who are intrigued by animals. There are simple words, rhymes, and different rhythms that assist the children as they try to master reading. The ending can lead into an art project and discussion where the children reflect further so their understanding is enhanced. Deborah Stevenson commented that there is minimal vocabulary and this is a good book for newly hatched readers.
Review by Ashley:
I enjoyed this book because I could relate to Daniel's responsibility of owning and taking care of a pet. The written text is good for beginning readers and the plot is simple and easy to follow. The artwork looks like it could have been done by a child, but they correlate nicely to the written text. The format of the book flows from one page to the next describing what Daniel does to take care of this pet chick Jen. At the end of the book you see true excitement from Daniel because Jen is having chicks that he will now care for.
This book would be useful when teaching...
Daniel's Pet would be an excellent book for children to learn the value of responsibility when it comes to pets. Many children want a pet when they are younger and by reading this book they can see how Daniel took care of this pet chick, Jen.
