Dinosaur Hunter
Review by: Samantha Formato
Authors: Elaine Marie Alphin
Publisher: HarperCollins
Year of Publication: 2003
Genre: Fiction
Summary: This is a great book for children that are ready to transition into reading chapter books. Ned, the main character finds a dinosaur skeleton on his fathers ranch and soon after has many more unexpected discoveries. Even though a rival fossil hunter tries to take over the expedition Ned stays calm and does not give up on his dream.
Professional Review: Horn book gives this chapter book a rating of 2. Horn book likes the watercolor illustrations that help set the time of the story. This book is made for readers who do not need to rely heavily on illustrations, but the illustrations help to sketch in the personalities of the characters.
My Review: I thought this chapter book was a great read for readers who are just starting to read chapter books. The plot line is simple, but the text is rich and will keep the readers engaged. Ned takes his readers on a fossil hunting adventure and the illustrations added to the text help the readers take in the atmosphere that Ned is experiencing. This book is heavy on the dialogue for a beginning reader but is the perfect transition into chapter books. The illustrators use of water colors really helps to tie the whole book together and paint a good picture for the readers.
How to use in the classroom: This book would be the perfect introduction to learning about dinosaurs. As a teacher you could discuss what fossils are and how important they are to being able to understand and classify the different types of dinosaurs. You could also talk about all of the things that we have fossils are and explain that there are not just fossil of dinosaurs.
