Dog and Bear
Author and Illustrator: Laura Vaccaro Seeger
Publisher: Roaring Book Press
Year of Publication: 2007
Genre: Fantasy Narrative
Horn Book Review: 1
Summary: There are three different short stories within this book, but all three are about Dog and Bear, two best friends. In the first story, Bear is stuck on a chair and Dog has to help him get down. In the second story, Dog wants to play with Bear, but Bear just wanted to read a story (about a dog and a bear that are best friends). In the third story, Dog wants to change his name to something that is not so boring.
Summary of Professional Reviews: The first thing that is mentioned in most of the reviews is the illustrations. Each of the illustrations is outlined in black and then painted with five other colors. THe illustrations are placed on white backgrounds and full pages to make the characters stand out. The text is simple for young kids to read and much of the book is talking, which makes the book more relatable and enjoyable for young children.
Review by Sarah Custard: I think that this book is very good for young students to read. This is easy text and can relate to the students because they may be afraid to get off a chair, begging someone to play with them, and then getting sick of their own name. Students will enjoy the illustrations because they are fun. This book will be enjoyable to read because it is an easier text and the students will not be disappointed when they have trouble with the words. The fact that there are three stories within one book may make it more interesting for the students because each of the stories is short and the students will not get bored easily.
This book may be used as a book for students to read when they are first beginning reading or when they are reading their first real book. The teacher may also use this type of book to teach children about short stories because the three different stories in this book are only a few pages long. I may even use it in a classroom to teach students what a narrative is. That is a very big word for young students to know, so I may save that for an older classroom, but it would really help to teach students what a narrative is because this book does include a lot of talking between the two characters.
