Publisher: Scholastic
Year of Publication: 2006

Horn Book Rating: 2
Summary: Pigeon says he’s not tired and he wants to stay up late. He uses every funny trick in the book to fight bedtime.
Summary of Professional Reviews: Children may identify with pigeon’s tricks to get to stay up, but they will certainly enjoy getting to play the grown up this time. His tactics range from saying he’s not tired, to changing the subject, to wanting a hot dog party. As the story goes on and pigeon gets more tired the background gets darker.
Review by Crystal Ball: Children familiar with pigeon will not be disappointed with the antics he uses to stay out of bed. He uses very crafty excuses, such as watching educational television and philosophical reasoning, to stay out of bed. He comically slides further and further into the abyss of exhaustion. Eventually we get to learn what pigeon dreams about. The illustrations perfectly match Pigeon's changing mood by going from a bright pink to a midnight blue.
This book would be useful when teaching…
Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late! would be useful in teaching students about listening to their bodies. They shouldn't fight sleep because their bodies need it to stay healthy. It could lead into a discussion about what other things a person needs to be fit.
