DRAGON'S HALLOWEEN
Author & Illustrator: Dav Pilkey
Publisher: Scholastic Inc.
Year of Publication: 1993
Genre: Comedy and Humor/ Fantasy
Horn Book or Kirkus Reviews rating: Horn Book: 3
Summary:
In the first chapter Dragon goes to find pumpkins that he can make into scary jack-o-lantern and ends up scaring his friends and himself. Dragon then gets dressed in a costume for a Halloween party and when he arrives at the party a pumpkin falls on top of his head when the bench he was sitting on gets tipped over and scares him. At last he gets scared by his hungry stomach making really loud noises until a squirrel tells him to go home and get food.
Summary of Professional Reviews:
As mentioned by Carolyn Phelan the cartoonlike drawings hold much of the humor within the story about Dragon's strange predicaments. The art and text work well together because the children can use the pictures to get their humor rather than from the words.
Review by Ashley:
Dragon is caught in different scary situations and may have the children laughing. The pictures are very well done and accompany the situations very nicely. For example, the dragon shows up to the party in his soaking wet costume and you can visually see how unhappy he s that his costume is ruined. The students may relate to the different situations presented in this book as the plot is different and engaging. Children will be enjoyed as they follow Dragon through each chapter as does different things for Halloween.
This book would be useful when teaching...
Dragon's Halloween would be a nice book to read during he time of Halloween that could get some discussions going about what the children will do, wear, and go for Halloween. Teachers could use this book to let children know that not everything with Halloween is going to be scary, but things can also be funny and entertaining.
