Ducks Don't Wear Socks!
Review by: Brian Beck
Author: John Nedwidek
Illustrator: Lee White
Publisher: Viking
Year of Publication: 2008
Genre: Humor
Summary: Emily was a very serious girl, who did everything very seriously. That was, until she came across a duck wearing socks. She thought ducks didn't wear anything, until she saw him the next few days wearing other things (a tie, underwear, a hat) and she thought it was funny. She then started to become less serious and more happy and enjoyable.
Professional Review: With a HORN Book Rating of 3, it is applauded for being creatively written. Although it was called "simple," its illustrations were liked. Other reviewers said it was quirky, funny and a highly recommended book for it's target audience. A reviewer said it was interesting to see how the duck's personality influenced the girl's mood and make her happy.
My Review: I think this book was very simple, yet had a lot of great things about it. I like how the girl was grumpy and serious in the beginning, but the more she was around the duck, the happier she became. It shows the reader that others can influence you and bring happiness into their life. The importance of friendship and happiness is the main focus in this book.
How to Use in the classroom: Children will love this book because of its witty humor and unexpected ending. I read this book aloud to the class, and then incorporate a writing assignment. I would have them write down a time they once made someone happy or someone made them happy when they were too serious or unhappy about something. It would tie into other people's feelings and how to live a better life.
