Eat Like a Bear
Review by: Samantha Formato
Author: April Pulley Sayre
Illustrated by: Steve Jenkins
Publisher: Holt
Year of Publication: 2013
Genre: Fiction
Summary: This book has the readers follow a brown bear and see what they eat throughout the year to prepare for winter. Eat Like a Bear has a repetitive rhyme scheme to it that makes the book enjoyable.
Professional Review: Horn book gives this book a 2. Horn book says that this book has "comfortingly repetitive, cadenced text" that asks the readers direct questions throughout the book. Horn book also says, "Jenkins's torn-paper illustrations are reproduced with such clarity that one can almost grasp the thick, fuzzy fur of the bear."
My Review: I really enjoyed reading this book. The illustrations draw the readers in with their quality and sense of texture. The book is also very informative, but teaches about the brown bear in a very enjoyable way. The repetition of the months help the readers keep the time frame of the story and the rhyming that April Pulley Sayre adds in keeps the story flowing and interesting.
How to use in the classroom: You could use this in the classroom by teaching about the life cycle of a brown bear. You could read the book to the children and then teach them about what bears eat and why they hibernate. You could also teach them about what hibernation is and how important it is for bears to eat a lot before they go into hibernation.
