Summary: Eats, Shoots and Leaves is a cleaver and fun way for students to understand why commas are important. Students will learn the importance of grammar while having fun reading it.
Summary of Professional Reviews: Eats, Shoots and Leaves is a good adaptation of the adult novel. This novel is easier for young readers to understand and see why grammar can be funny but important. The pictures add to the humor of the funny sentences and the differences between the correct and incorrect sentence punctuation.
Review by Jane Fuscellaro: I thought this was a clever and unique way of looking at punctuation and commas. I have also read the adult version of this book. I think the author did a good job of simplifying the story for a child. The illustrations are funny and eye catching to look at. The text is humorous but also get the point across so children understand. It teacher the imporantce of commas, while not even teaching about commas.
This book would be useful when teaching…
This book would be good when students are working on writing and the importance of proper comma usage.
As as teacher I would read this story to my students, then put up on the over head examples in our own writing (not using names) so students can work with me point out where the comma goes or taking one away.
