Title: Flora and the Flamingo
Review by: Samantha Formato
Author: Molly Idle
Publisher: Chronicle
Year of Publication: 2013
Genre: fiction
Summary: An exceptional picture book of a little girl mimicking a flamingo’s movement.
Summary of Professional Reviews: Horn Book gives this book a 1. Horn Book thinks that this is a unique wordless picture book that is comedic and cinematic. They say that the illustrations in this book, “allow the characters’ chemistry—and the physical comedy—to take center stage.”
Review by Samantha Formato: I think this beautifully illustrated picture book is original and fun. This is perfect for beginner readers and the book does not need words for the readers to understand the comical beauty of the pictures. The book starts out with the flamingo being annoyed at the little girl, but then sympathizes and teaches her ballet. The book adds character by having some pull down flaps with different illustrations underneath.
This book would be useful when teaching… You could use this book in elementary classrooms by having the students replicate some of the movements the little girl and flamingo are doing in the story. It is good to get kids up and moving and this book would be perfect for doing just that.
