Summary: Grace for President is the story of an inspiring little girl who wants to change the United States by being the first woman President. But before she can do that, she wants to be the president of her school. Which she wins and earns respectfully.
Summary of Professional Reviews: The illustrations in the book, show off the different ethnicity but also gender difference. It is empowering to see Grace, a little girl, want to take on leadership as president. Kelly DiPuchhio explained the electoral system easily for kids to understand it. This story is realistic and child center, therefore children will relate well to the story.
Review by Jane Fuscellaro: Grace for President is one that will inspire girls to take on leadership and so called 'manly' roles. I think this book is a great influence for girls but also boys. I like how this book is not all about how girls should be president, but how everyone has a choice and the same chance, because we are all equal, to be president. I liked the illustrations in this book and how every student in the book looks different, not the same.
This book would be useful when teaching…
I thought this book would be helpful when teaching students about presidents in history. This story helps students to understand the value of independent thought and the value of hard work.
Presidential Election: A good way to get students to experience this book and to understand the electoral system as well as equality, students should have their own election. Just as in the book, students should represent different country and be taught the value of a vote. Two or three students can run for president, and the class/classes get to vote on who will be the president. Students will understand the importance of a voice, a vote, and equality.
