Review by Kitty Anthony: I do believe that the author uses simple words and phrases but this is set to be used for young children. I enjoyed the character that the illustrator chose because young children will like the young chimp and will follow him through his variety of emotions. I thought the illustrations were engaging and inviting for the readers. The author also did a wonderful job of providing reasons for each emotion that match what activities children usually engage in at a young age. For example, when the author writes, "Sometimes I feel guilty" the author supplied us with a picture of the chimp drawing on the wall. This helps the book relate to the real life experiences of the reader.
This book would be useful when teaching…
Teachers can use this book when first introducing emotions to children. They may know what many of the emotions already are but it will introduce some emotions that they never knew they could experience. For example they may have never heard of guilty or curious. After reading this book, depending on the grade level, teachers could have the students make some type of feelings chart with all the emotions listed in the book on the chart. The students can use these charts during the day to express the emotion they are feeling.
