Summary:This story is based on a pond and some of the creatures you may find there. The story uses a variety of descriptive language to imagine the pond in your head beyond the illustrations.
Summary of Professional Reviews: The Horn Book Guide gives this story a rating of 2 and comments on how Fleming uses a similar illustration technique that she has used in a previous book. It goes on to mention how she illustrates each page with such details and bright colors along with having the text seem to follow the illustrations in the story. In addition, Kirkus Reviews gives this book a starred review. The reviewer also likes how Fleming used the rhyming text to flow with the illustration making this a great introduction to nature story for young children. This book received two awards of Ohioana Book Award 1994 (Ohio Winner)and Randolph Caldecott Medal 1994.
Review by Jessica Rodriguez: This book explores the sounds and actions that may happen at a pond. I found the book delightful as it uses a great variety of descriptive words to explain what each creature at the pond does. Also, the way the author sets up each page with the words to follow along with the wonderful illustrations. The different fonts, and sizes of the text gives the simple words a stronger meaning. Along with the illustrations help you to see a clear picture of the pond and the way the illustrator used bright and bold colors to make the illustrations pop out at you.
This book would be useful when teaching…
- This book would be useful when discussing some animals/creatures that live at a pond.
- Also, this is a good start for a writing workshop mini lesson, the classroom teacher can read the story first then with the class have a discussion on the types of descriptive vocabulary in the story that made it come alive to the reader.
- Ideal for grades K through 2nd.
