Summary: This fantasy chapter book is about a young boy, James, and a tree that grows to be as big as a home. He later finds pathway that allows him enter this other world and be able to meet new creatures while exploring new adventures.
Summary of Professional Reviews: Although, they say Dahl's "interpretation of the fantasy is not quite as magical as Burket's delightful renderings," this book still manages to receive a rating of 2 on the Horn book online source. They enjoyed the "black-and-white pencil sketches" Smith provided, but readers should still read the original edition of this fairytale adventure.
Review by Madie Henderson: Ronald Dahl was and still is my favorite author. James and the Giant Peach is one of my many favorites from Ronald Dahl. I enjoyed reading many of his fairytale adventures from the BFG to Willy Wanka and the Chocolate Factory to Matilda. He created page-worthy stories that were brilliant to creating such an imagination. James and the Giant Peach is just one of my favorite stories because it is like no other story I've ever read as a young student. It has such a creative element to be able to think of living in a peach with friends that are bugs.
This book would be useful when teaching… This story is great for teaching students in the later years of elementary school. Teachers could create guiding questions to help with students and their understanding. Another idea is teachers could allow students to create their own fantasy story by having student write their own fantasies using the different elements Ronald Dahl portrays in his stories.
