Library Lion
Review by: Brian Beck
Author: Michelle Knudsen
Illustrator: Kevin Hawkes
Publisher: Scholastic
Year of Publication: 2006
Genre: Fiction
Summary: This book is excellent for introducing rules. The lion did break the rule of "No Running," but it was to get help for a hurt friend. "Sometimes there is a GOOD reason to break the rules."
This book was given a review of a 3 by Horn Books. They said, "The gently humorous acrylic and pencil illustrations on creamy paper add charm to the well-paced story." Another reviewer said, "I would definitely recommend this book to any young child who enjoys spending time in the library." This book was defined as "Magical," "Outstanding," and "Highly Recommended."
My Review: This is one of my favorite books. Not only do the outstanding pictures keep the reader engaged, the overall story is a real treasure. It has an important lesson learned and it is appropriate to young children. I think this book is a must-read for any child.
How to use it in the Classroom:
It has a great ending and would be great for teaching students about doing the right thing, even if you are told something, such as a rule, that could stop you. You could talk with the students about how rules and helping friends are important.
