LILLY's PURPLE PLASTIC PURSE
Author & Illustrator: Kevin Henkes
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Year of Publication: 1996
Genre: Fiction
Horn Book or Kirkus Reviews rating: Horn Book: 1
Summary:
Lilly loved school, especially her teacher and was very excited to show off her new purse, shiny quarters, and new sunglasses, but when her teacher wouldn't let her show them right away she got mad. She wrote him a mean letter and put it in her bag, but got upset when she realized that she needed to wait her turn and that her teacher was not truly mean and she finally gets to share her belongings and everyone has a blast.
Summary of Professional Reviews:
Jan Lieberman states that this book is hitting the emotions that many children feel in their elementary years on the spot. It can also help the children understand the relationships that they need to have with certain adults and that not every adult can be their "buddy" all the time. As said by Kirkus Reviews, the illustrations really help enhance the things that she does, such as dancing, anger, remorse, and joy as she goes on her adventure with her new items. As mentioned by the Cooperative Children's Book Center Choices, the author does an excellent job at making what he does look great.
Review by Ashley:
This book will help children understand that there is a proper time in school to share personal things, like new items. The illustrations are a great way for children to relate to how Lilly feels in this book because they can actually see how she is feeling (mad, sad). It will also give children the idea that they can share how they feel about different things with their teachers because they do care. The plot gives the children the opportunity to predict what will happen at the end.
This book would be useful when teaching...
Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse would be a good introduction book to teaching children to be patient. Many children can relate to Lilly wanting to show off her new items she got, but once they see that Lilly was finally patient then they can be too. It may also help children know that saying something mean can hurt someones feelings, like when Lilly wrote the note.
