Little Pink Pup
Review by: Brian Beck
Author: Johanna Kerby
Publisher: G.P. Putnam's Sons
Year of Publication: 2010
Genre: Non Fiction
Summary: Little Pink was the smallest one of twelve piglets. He wasn't able to survive out in the barn, so his owners brought him inside the house and their dauschaund adopted him as her own. Inside, he played and ate like one of the dogs. After he got too big, he was taken out to the barn and his puppy siblings visited him everyday. This was based on a true story.
Professional Review: The HORN Book Rating system rated this book a 3 and said it was easy to read and had lively photographs. Other reviews stated this book had a good narrative and was attractive to animal loving readers.
My Review: I think this book is very special since it is a true story. The photographs are nicely displayed and the story line is simple, yet entertaining. The author's purpose was to let the reader know that it is okay to be different and everyone should be accepted. It was a touching story to read and it was enjoyable.
How to Use in the classroom: This book would be great to use in the classroom to teach about differences and acceptance. It teaches that you can still be part of a group or family even if you are different. It would be a great way to introduce the addition of a new student who may have obvious physical handicaps. It would teach the children that the child would be accepted just as non-handicapped children are and that the child may be different, but he is going to be our friend and we need to make him feel welcomed, just like the dog did to Pink the pig.
