Year of Publication: 2010
Genre: Children’s Literature
Horn Book or Kirkus Reviews rating: 2
Summary:
Lots of Spots is a superb collection of animals that young ones
will enjoy paging through time and again. The 50 plus mammals,
birds, fish, and reptiles are all renderedin the artist’s signature
collage style seem to actually leap off the page. The rhyming
in the book also makes it more fun to read.
Summary of Professional Reviews:
K-Gr 2–In keeping with her traditional bold, collage illustrations,
Ehlert portrays an array of animals with spots and stripes. Each one
is described in a catchy, four-line rhyme. The subjects include
a wood duck, an iguana, a turtle, a goose, a goat, a Dalmatian,
and a cow, among others. Lots of Spots would make a good
addition to an author/illustrator unit on Ehlert's work, but its
stand-alone value as a poetry or animal book falls short
of remarkable.
Review by Rokaya:
This is a very colorful and fun book that introduces
many animals that have spots. The text rhymes which makes
it very fun to read. The illustrations in the book look interesting
because it looks like a bunch of construction paper put together
to form pictures. There are many lessons that teachers can form
after reading this book.
This book would be useful when teaching…
Teachers can use this book in the classroom to teach about
animals, patterns, or counting. Students can pick an animal in
the book and draw a picture of it with the spots or patterns
that the animal has. For counting, students can count the spots
on the animal or the teacher can assign each student a number
and each student must pick an animal and draw that amount
of spots on the animal.
