Review by Alexis: Rappaport does a fantastic job of telling about Dr. King's life and his impact on the Civil Rights Movement. Throughout the story, Rappaport uses some of Dr. King's own words to stress the idea that King wanted to use his words to help bring about a change. By including his childhood and death, Rappaport tells a more complete and compelling story about Dr. King. Collier's illustrations are just as moving as Rappaport's text. Collier's collage illustrations are absolutely beautiful and truly depict the action in the text. There is also a timeline in the back of the book which is useful when using this book to teach with. It tells all of the important events in Dr. King's life and important events that happened during the Civil Rights Movement. It gives teachers/students a quick overview of events both included and not included in the story.
This book would be useful when teaching… This book would be useful when teaching fourth grade students about Dr. King or the Civil Rights Movement. This book would go along with Pennsylvania standard 8.3.4.D: Distinguish between conflict and cooperation among groups and organization that impacted the history and development of the United States. A teacher could use this book to introduce the students to a lesson on the Civil Rights Movement or as a lesson on Dr. King around MLK day.
