Year of Publication: 2007
Genre: Chapter Book
Horn Book: 2
Summary: Maybelle is a cockroach that lives in a house with a 'no bug' rule. Maybelle loves food and gets herself in trouble when the owner of the house invites people over and she wants to taste some soup.
Summary of Professional Reviews: Maybelle loves food but she is sick of crumbs and spills and longs for the tasty food she sees on the
Peabodys' plates. Despite the warning of her friend Henry the Flea, Maybelle visits the dinner table. Delightful details will make adults laugh right along with new readers. The short chapters and readable text allows early readers to enjoy a chapter book independently. References to Herbert's comb-over, his wife's false eyelashes and illustrations that show the drama of an airborne roach and the bottom of Herbert's monstrous shoe add up to a lot of fun, especially for reading aloud.
Review by Kim Beers: This is a great book for beginning chapter readers. The chapters are very short and great for introducing the idea of chapters. There were very few illustrations but where there was, they were connected with the text on the page. Because it was a chapter book, the pictures tended to be small and not very detailed and did not contain many items. The text itself was very fitting for the age group.
This book would
be useful when teaching…
Maybelle in the Soup would be useful when teaching children the different rules there are for different places. Every where they go there is some sort of rules they need to follow and discussing the rules of their classroom and other places they would go.
Maybelle in the Soup would be useful when teaching children problem solving when problems arise. The teacher and students could create of list of ways to help solve problems there are in.
