Summary: This book is about Harriet Tubman trying to free herself, her family, and her people from slavery and all she has beside her is the voice of God guiding her to her way to freedom.
Summary of Professional Reviews:
The Horn Book Review states that " Weatherford's poetic telling and Nelson's atmospheric paintings of Tubman's role in the Underground Railroad portray the spiritual life of the African American visionary". It is clear that Harriet Tubman's faith is what led her to freedom because that was the only thing she had when she escaped from the South.
Review by Ranim Sankari:
This is a wonderful, poetic book that shows Harriet Tubman's journey when she planned to escape to freedom. Harriet did not want to tell a soul about her plan and the fact that she decided to leave her husband and family behind was very brave of her. Once she lead her way to freedom with the help of God's chanting voice beside her, she felt lonely and God advised her to go back to save her family and her people. Harriet Tubman did what she was advised to do and considering that she put her life back in danger again, it showed how courageous she was. She finally freed herself, her family, and her people and was called "Moses" because she was the hero of her people.
This book would be useful when teaching…

- This book can be used as a history lesson about the underground railroad. It can show a part of what Harriet Tubman had to deal with when trying to escape from slavery. It can also be used when students are learning about Harriet Tubman because it uniquely tells her journey in a simple and rhythmic way that students can understand.
- Another lesson that this book can be used for is poetry. Teachers can refer to this book when trying to teach certain components of this book. For example, if a teacher is teaching that poetry is rhythmic and can be written as a chant then this is a great example that portrays such components of poetry.
