Summary of Professional Reviews
Horn Book Guide explains this story by stating that author Jenkins presents animals' not-always-obvious physical or behavioral defense mechanisms. Creatures include platypuses, hippopotamuses, and cane toads. Each page contains one of Jenkins's richly detailed cut-paper illustrations, an alliterative caution about the human behaviors that would cause the animal's defenses to activate, and a brief explanation of the unfortunate consequences of such actions.
My Review
I am a fan of Steve Jenkin's books because of how interacting they can be and how the illustrations are usually giant, bright, and clear. This nonfiction book shocked me because I was expecting pages to have obvious things to not do to wild animals. I would have NEVER guessed how something as simple as collecting a cone shell can be dangerous. This book is very good for readers who love animals/wild animals or just love learning about knew things. Readers will benefit greatly from knowing these true facts.
This book would be useful when teaching...
students about wild animals. You can have lots of lessons on what kinds of wild animals were mentioned in the book, where each of them may live, and what are the reasons behind these things you should never do to them.
