Summary: This semi-autobiographical story of a little boy, David, never listens to his mother’s rules, is always telling him “No, David!” But with all of his misbehaviors, the story ends with a positive message.
Summary of Professional Reviews: Horn book review guide online gave this book a rating of 3. They enjoyed the repetition of the word “No” and how it’s “the word toddlers hear the most.” Also, with a touching ending of how “his mother reassures him of her love” shows that she tells David "No" only because she loves him. The Kirkus book review gave this book a starred review and states how this mischievous little boy never listens to his mother; “David is a small, snaggle-toothed piehead whose mischief for those who don’t have to clean up after him is nothing short of exhilarating.”
Review by Madie Henderson: I remember reading this book as a child and I remember laughing for hours on how misbehaved David was. When I read this book or even see it in the library I just remember the laugh-worthy experience I had. As I’ve grown up, I could relate to David’s position by always being told “No!” Shannon does a very nice job illustrating the various misbehaviors David has encountered. Also, I really enjoyed the very touching ending when his mother says, “Davey, come here. Yes David…I love you.”
This book would be useful when teaching… This book is great for young readers. There are very few words on each page which allows young readers to recognize the words. This is also a great way to teach lessons to young children about following rules/directions and other manners. Also, when adults are upset with them, we do not automatically dislike them, we do it because we love them. This book could also teach a lesson about safety in the classroom or in other environments.
