Nouns and Verbs
Author: Robin Pulver
Illustrator: Lynn Rowe Reed
Publisher: Holiday House
Year of Publication: 2006
Genre: Fiction
Horn Book: 2
Summary: Nouns and verbs have to pair up to play games. They realize they need to work together if they want to win.
Summary of Professional Reviews: Feeling left out after the children in Mr. Wright's class thunder outside for a
Field Day, the nouns and verbs left in the classroom decide to organize events of their own. But having chosen like parts of speech for partners-"Glue, Markers and Tape stuck together. Shout wanted to be with Cheer. So did Chew and Eat."-it quickly becomes apparent that as opposing teams they can't actually do anything. Reed's vividly colored cartoons capture the high-energy activity, showing triangular-shaped verbs smiling, hopping, and whining their way through the story, accompanied by a variety of animated classroom objects. Though the text and illustrations are silly, the author does a fantastic job explaining the parts of speech.
Review by Kim Beers: The overall theme of the book related well towards children. Since it was about a class who is having a field day, the author had the characters in the book pair up with their bestfriends, similarly to how it would actually be in real life if you let the children choose their partner. It was very clever of the author to have the characters work together and realize that the only way to win is to pair up with other people, not their best friends. The humor the illustrations portray also help when the students are reading the book.
This book would
be useful when teaching…
Noun and Verbs would be useful when teaching about nouns and verbs in the sense of pairing them. The book shows how some words are paired together, such as throw and catch. The teacher could pair other nouns and verbs that are similiar in those terms.
Nouns and Verbs would be useful when introducing nouns and verbs. So students are not overwhelmed, the book creates a creative and fun way to learn about nouns and verbs. The teacher could read the book with the children so they get a better understanding of the use of nouns and verbs.
