Summary: This is a story about a young girl named Melody that has cerebral palsy. Her story explains to the reader how difficult it is to be accepted by others and how difficult her life really is.
Summary of Professional Reviews: This is story about a fifth grade girl who has cerebral palsy. Draper tells the story very well of Melody's difficult journey through life with the condition that she has. The Horn Books states that "Draper shows the reader what it is really like to have tantrums and problems with mean girls or unexciting adults." This story makes you realize how lucky you really are, and to not take things for granted.
Review by Katie Henderson: This is a beautiful story about a young girl that has cerebral palsy. She tells her story very well, showcasing to us the heart wrenching stories and the triumphant successes. She tells us how she goes through daily problems, like dealing with unexciting adults and very brutal doctors. Most of this story is wonderful; however, the ending seemed quite rushed. Draper ends the story in a very unexpected way that is rushed and incomplete.
This book would be useful when teaching...students about children with disabilities. Children have a difficult time with understanding how children with disabilities think. This story will show children that children with disabilities are very much like us. They are smart, talented, and kind. Also, this would be something great to add into a diversity unit.
