Perfect Square
Review by: Brian Beck
Author: Michael Hall
Publisher: HarperCollins
Year of Publication: 2011
Genre: Fiction, Informational
Summary: This is a great book for teaching children about a square and what you can do with it artistically thinking. It allows children to see different ways you can cut, snip, crumbled and rip a square to make something new. The reader can also understand feelings (the square was happy), how colors relate to objects (green grass, blue water, etc.) and days of the week (On Monday....On Tuesday...).
Professional Review: This piece of literature was starred review by Kirkus. They loved Hall's use of colorful and geometric shapes that allow the reader to see a new creation from disassembling the square. HORN Book Review gave it a rating of 2, saying it was perfect for toddlers and "embraced self-empowerment."
My Review: I think this is a very informational book. I allows the reader to gain ideas on how to create a picture out of ripping or cutting a square into shapes and pieces. I love the bright colors and the creative illustrations. I really like how the pictures look as if some crumbled or ripped the paper.
How to Use in the classroom: This book would be great for teaching students about squares, shapes, or ways to create something new. It would be perfect for incorporating an art lesson, using squares, and encouraging the students to rip, crumble and cut the square into a new creation.
