Pete the Cat Saves Christmas
Review by: Samantha Formato
Author: Eric Litwin
Ilustrated by: James Dean
Publisher: Harper Collins
Year of Publication: 2012
Genre: Fiction
Summary: This Pete the Cat book is a parody of "The Night Before Christmas". Pete the cat saves Christmas while reminding everyone to do nice things for others.
Professional Review: Horn book gives this book a 2. Horn book says, "Dean's casual, somewhat naive paintings show a world inhabited by cats (even Santa) except for the reindeer and Pete's bird sidekick." Horn book really likes the rhyming in the book, they think it moves the story along briskly.
My Review: I think this book is a creative turn on "The Night Before Christmas". All of the characters are portrayed as cats except for the reindeer and the little bird friend. I really liked the rhyme scheme in the book and thought the author did a really good job writing this text. The main character, Pete is a very helpful character and always tries his best. This fun and fast paced book will help children understand the message incorporated into the rhymes; the most thing is giving your all to help others.
How to use in the classroom: You could use this book in the classroom by teaching about different Holiday traditions. It would be a silly way for everyone to get a look inside the Christmas Holiday. As a teacher you would have to also find books on other holidays that are celebrated around Christmas time. Your could have the children discuss the differences and the similarities between the different holidays.
