Summary:
This book is about a little orange square that feels like he is a part of someone else. He searches for his "missing piece" but eventually finds out that he is made up of little pieces and that he is a whole.
Summary of Professional Reviews:
Pezzettino is an italian word for "orange square". Pezzettino, as Horn Book Review said, thinks that he must be a missing piece of someone else. When this small orange square discovers that he is made up of little pieces, he realizes that he is not a missing part and screams "I am myself!". Lionni's way of making the illustrations big and the orange square small, portrays the point of being small in a big world.
Review by Ranim Sankari:
I believe that this is a wonderful book that portrays a beautiful message about how everyone is themselves and they are all different. The meaning of this book stands out especially when the book ended with the small orange square realizing that he is himself and not a missing piece. The part where he falls and shatters into many pieces shows the reader that sometimes when we are at our lowest point in life, we can pick ourselves back up and learn from our issues in life. The fact that the rest of the illustrations were all big, it shows the emotion of the small square much more because of the different size formats between the pictures that the illustrate chose to draw. The pictures were also very colorful and that made the small, simple orange square stand out even more.

- This story can be used when the teacher is teaching his/her students about how each and every one of them should accept who they are because they are all unique in their own ways.
- This could also be used for an art lesson when teaching students about shapes. This is a great book that focuses of the square shape.
- This book is a great story to use for read alouds in a classroom because of the simple narrative plot. Children can learn the narrative literary components of a book much easier than any other book due to the modest design of the text throughout the book.
