Pigs To The Rescue
Review by: Brian Beck
Author: John Himmelman
Publisher: Scholastic
Year of Publication: 2011
Genre: Fiction
Summary: This is a humorous book for young readers. It touches base with being helpful while being silly. By about the fourth page, the students will probably know what every other page will say, "PIGS TO THE RESCUE!" Be prepared to see how the pigs will help the Greenstalk family and their farm when they all seem to have a problem.
This story has a Horn Book rating of 3. It is a amusing, yet jokingly entertaining. It was praised for it's clever illustrations to go along with every page. The reviewer (Horn) said, "The cartoony art features amusing reaction shots of the 'rescued.' "
My Review: Although this book has a comical storyline, the book itself does not have a lesson learned or problem solved. The book is not for an educational use but rather for a pure enjoyment use. It is basically about pigs causing destruction to the farm owner and his family. The pigs are not offering any help, just causing fear in the characters.
How to use it in the Classroom:
This would be an interesting and silly book for a younger audience (Pre-K, kindergarten, 1st grade). It's a great book to read to the class after a productive day in the classroom to just end a busy day. It is silly and is the type of book to give the students a good laugh, but they will probably join in with the "Pigs to the Rescue!" on every other page spread, so it's keeping them engaged.
