Punctuation Celebration
Author: Elsa Knight Bruno
Illustrator: Jenny Whitehead
Publisher: MacMillian
Year of Publication: 2009
Genre: Nonfiction
Horn Book: 3
Summary: This book represents the different types of puctuations and how they are used, in a playful way for children.
Summary of Professional Reviews: A short poem introduces each punctuation mark and explains the rules of
its usage, while an example appears on the facing page. The verses explain the rules of punctuation fairly clearly. Although the concepts expressed are simple, the poems sometimes use advanced vocabulary in the service of rhyme. The illustrations add visual interest to the text without overcrowding the pages or distracting from the poems, which are printed in large, clear type, with everything in black except for the featured punctuation mark, which appears in red.
Review by Kim Beers: The layout of the book was great. The author introduced each of the different punctuation marks by stating what it is and ways it is used. The next page consists of the ways it is used. The illustrations typed in to the text and demonstrated what the author was referring too. The illustration were things the students could relate to so it made the text more appreciative by the students. The author also made the text rhyme. Young children love rhymes and it is a great way to incorporate learning while rhymning.
This book would
be useful when teaching…
Punctuation Celebration would be useful when teaching about the different types of punctuation. This book gives a lot of creative examples of how to use each type of punctuation. The children could be asked to use each type of punctuation in adifferent way.
Punctuation Celebration would be useful when teaching about the different punctuations and where you would see them and how important they are. The teacher could show examples of how if punctuation marks are used incorrectly that it changes the meaning of the sentence.
