Review by Christine Grasser: I really love how the story comes out even when there are no words to read. Becker’s use of illustration, such as following where the two main characters are looking, bring the story out. There are a few scenes in the book where Becker expertly breaks apart the scene on one page, so the reader knows exactly what is happening when the full picture comes on the next page. Becker’s use of characters is very interesting, and uses character elements to depict main characters, flat characters, and conflict; all without any printed text.
This book would be useful when teaching…
This is a very complex book to use, but I feel this can be used effectively to teach many fictional narrative elements. Plot may be the most difficult, but with multiple readings and study of the illustrations, readers are able to form a plot. This is a great book to teach about the character elements, too. I would also recommend this book to teach art and the value of color and shapes.
