Rhyming Dust Bunnies
Author and Illustrator: Jan Thomas
Publisher: Scholastic Inc.
Year of Publication: 2009
Genre: Rhyming
Horn Book Review: 3
Summary: The book is about four dust bunnies that rhyme all of the time, except for one who dust bunny, Bob, who is more concerned about the situation that includes a broom and vacuum. In response to each rhyme, Bob shouts out about their enemy drawing close, and then the inevitable occurs.
Summary of Professional Reviews: Most of the reviews for this book were just a summary of what happened, not necessarily reviewing most of the book. The solid and bright illustrations and also speech bubbles will make the students laugh, while also accentuating the text. It is also believed that the students will enjoy fixing Bob's mistakes when he does not rhyme with the others.
Review by Sarah Custard: I believe this book is a very good beginner book for many children. The sounds in the words are simple for the most part (other than Bob's phrases) and the pictures are amusing for children. Once the children figure out what the ending sound is for the rhyming words, they will have an easier time reading the words and possibly understanding them. Some of the words are things that the students may not have heard of (hog meaning pig or tar for the road) and that might confuse them at points. The illustrations are very good because the dust bunnies are outlined in black but some of their color does go outside the lines, which can show that it is okay if the students do sometimes make a mistake when coloring.
This book would be useful when teaching the children about words that rhyme. It can be a hard concept to teach to children and they do not always understand right away, but by seeing it over and over throughout the book, it might be a better example and help them understand. The teacher could emphasize the ending sounds for the students so that they could catch onto the fact that the words sound the same, and after each page, the teacher could ask the students to say a word that would rhyme with the rest.
