Horn Book or Kirkus Reviews rating: Horn Book: 3
Summary:
A new student arrives in Mrs. Connor's class and it is the day where the students are electing a class president, so the students give some speeches of what they promise to do. The new student gives a speech and ends up winning class president.
Summary of Professional Reviews:
Illene Cooper said that the students should pick up on the fact that it is better to promise honesty rather than everything. The illustrations help to motivate students as they read with the repetitive vocabulary. After being reviewed by Marilyn Coutot this book is said to be a good civics lesson for children who are beginning to read.
Review by Ashley:
I found this book to be educational for students because elections are always happening. The emotions that I felt from this book were towards competition and winning to be class president. The plot of the story can have students guessing who will become class president and why they think that person will win. The art is somewhat cartoonish, but works very well with this book. I feel that the format of the book shows what an actual classroom can look like and how the students can get really excited to participate in different elections within the classroom.
This book would be useful when teaching...
Robin Hill School Election Day would be a useful book to help students understand elections. It is very important to teach students to make promises that they can keep instead of promising outrageous things that they cannot keep.
