Snowballs
Review by: Brian Beck
Author: Lois Ehlert
Publisher: Harcourt
Year of Publication: 1996
Genre: Fiction
Summary: This is an excellent book that follows an entire snowball family by dressing them with items from around the house. This great, easy read would be perfect for any winter day.
With a Horn Book rating of 2, this book is a real gem. The "large well-designed illustrations effectively blend open space, colorful paper cutouts, and real objects," while providing an easy read for any reader in early childhood education. It is a "vibrant" book that will get the students excited about snow. One reviewer even said, "The whole package: is fun to look at, fun to read, and fun to share."
My Review:I really enjoy the illustrations in this book and it even includes ideas for other objects you could use when building a snowman. The pictures in this book are large, creative and colorful. Throughout, the author gives ideas along with accompanying pictures for building a snow family. I think the author wanted to create a story that allowed children to think about different ways to be creative. Lois Ehlert went above and beyond with this classic winter book.
How to use it in the Classroom:
I would read this book to encourage kids to be creative. The story uses household items to decorate and create an entire snow family. You could even make this a whole lesson on how to build the perfect snowman and have students create a paper snowman, wearing household items for it's face, clothes and arms. This would really encourage creativity with the students just like the author of this book was creative with this snow family.
