Summary: This story is about friendship between Stick and Stone and how they rescue each other from their "sticky" situations.
Summary of Professional Reviews: The Horn book review online rated this book a 2. They really enjoyed the story line behind friendship and humor of the story, "a leisurely paced friendship...with humor, rather than obvious lesson teaching, moves the story along." Also, they enjoyed the flow of the story with its "uncomplicated rhyming text" and "warm pastel illustrations" to show the effectiveness of the character's facial expressions.
Review by Madie Henderson: I enjoyed reading this book for it's rhymic flow throughout the book. The illustrations by Tom Lichtenheld are very vivid and appealing to look at. Overall, I enjoyed the concept of stick and stone being friends on a playground. Usually when I think of sticks and stones, I think of the saying "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." This concept is used throughout the book. When Stick "sticks up" for Stone when the pinecone "won't leave him alone" proves that words can't "break" stone.
This book would be useful when teaching… This book is great for teaching young readers. It has a variety of rhyming words that create a nice flow to the book. This book is also a great way to teach friendship and provides an anti-bullying message. Teachers could create a lesson about how we could prevent bullying in the classroom and on the playground just like Stick and Stone did.
