Summary: Swimmy is a small, black fish that shows everyone that it is okay to have fears. Swimmy shows his friends ways that they can face their fears together.
Summary of Professional Reviews: Swimmy is a little black fish in a school of red fish. Swimmy wants to protect all of his red fish friends from the dangers of the ocean. This Caldecott Honor book shows how important one friend is to an entire group. The Horn Book states that Swimmy has "astonishing beautiful seascapes flu of undulating watery nuances of shape, pattern, and color." Overall, this story is great for young children to see that everyone has fears.
Review by Katie Henderson: This is a great book to read to your students. This is a story about a little black fish that tries to overcome his fears with all of his red fish friends. The story line is something great to read to younger children to show them that everyone has fears and how to overcome them. This book is incredibly illustrated with plenty of patterns and shapes that captivate the reader. Children will love the amazing colors that Lionni used in all of his pictures to really bring the story to life.
This book would be useful when teaching...Children about different sea creatures. This story has plenty of sea creatures, like lobsters and eels that children may not be aware of. This would go great in a science lesson. Also, I think that this would go great in an art/math lesson. The children can create a school of fish in any shape they would like. Finally, this would be a great time to inform children that everyone has fears. The teacher could give helpful hints on how to overcome or face their fears.
