Summary:
This is a stroy about a grumpy man who always says terrific. He gets stranded on an island and he meets Lenny the parrot and he helps them both get off the island and they grow to become friends.
Summary of Professional Reviews:
The pictures in the book are vivid images of what is being described in the text. The illustrations are great. This book is not about your typical hero but the students will love Eugene. The use of repetition of the word terrific is evident throughout the book. Every time something happens he says terrific in a sarcastic way until at the end when the parrot decides to stay with him then he says terrific and means it.
Review by Anthony Germani:
This book would be excellent for students because they could relate someone in their lives to Eugene. This book would teach them that all they need to do is be nice and help this person out then they can become friends. The illustrations in this book are simply amazing. This book could be told without words because the pictures are just that breathe taking.
This book would be useful when teaching
Teachers can use this book when teaching a lesson about birds. They can talk about the specific type of bird in this story, a parrot. This could raise the discussion question in class, Do parrots really talk? You can explain to them that parrots actually do talk in real life unlike any other bird. They will be amazed and maybe the teacher could even arrange for a zoologist to come in the day that she is reading this story and bring in a parrot.
